JediTink Talks Superheroes

JediTink talks superheroes with a group of fanboys and girls to discuss (and argue) how TV superheroes have evolved from The Adventures Of Superman in the 1950’s all the way up to today with Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Who’s superhero suit enabled them to fly, just not to land (you will “believe it or not”)? See if you can answer Superhero trivia before we do!

JediTink: From Concept to Costume

JediTink: From Concept to Costume

A year ago I was learning how to sew so I could bring JediTink to life at Star Wars Celebration VI. I didn’t want to entrust my vision to anyone else! The costume had to be the perfect combination of flirty pixie and Jedi warrior. I made several sketches before hitting upon just the right balance.

JediTink Concept Sketch

Pinterest was remarkably helpful in providing a place to see a bunch of ideas, colors and patterns all at once. See the Ideation Board.

Now that the vision was in place, all I had to do was find the proper fabric for the Jedi straps, tube top and skirt. What better place than at LA’s downtown fashion district! Dozens of stores carrying thousands of fabric bolts – where else could I find the exact fabric I was looking for?

LA Fashion District

I had to find several fabrics that worked well together for the skirt, and I was intent on locating the perfect shade of green suede for the Jedi belt and straps. We scoured the shops. Some were selling suede, but only in giant pieces that cost 100′s of dollars. Finally we hit upon 3 scraps that were just big enough to create the Jedi belt and straps. Luckily I’m only 5′ 3″!

JediTink Fabric

Because this was my own creation, I couldn’t just walk in to Jo-Ann’s and buy a pattern. I had to create one using *gasp* math! Those Honors Algebra classes certainly came in handy ;)

Cutting into that suede was a little scary, but I got the hang of it pretty quick. I am always amazed at how a shapeless, square piece of fabric becomes something full of movement and life just by cutting and adding a few stitches. It’s magic!

I had my mom, an accomplished seamstress, on speed-dial for weeks as I attempted to sew. She was remarkably patient and a great teacher. JediTink was taking shape!

What’s most important in a Tinkerbell costume? Why, the wings, of course! I began my search for the perfect wings in March, and that planning ahead turned out to be my salvation. After scouring the internet and contacting various cosplayers, I settled on On Gossamer Wings. The great thing about her wings is that she could customize them. Send her fabric samples and she matches her airbrush colors exactly to your fabric. I was sold! I emailed her and she said she was booked solid for the next several months. Yikes! But luckily she had one slot open during the summer – she could finish them 1 week before I had to leave for SW Celebration. Whew!

They finally arrived in the mail in a gigantic box, one day before our flight. My costume was complete!

 Accessories & Make-up

The Leather gauntlets I found online at VampieOodles. The belt and lightsaber were gifts from my husband. We found the hardware at Jo-Ann’s.

JediTink Costume Detail

As for make-up, I tried several ideas and Pinned more which you can see on my Pinterest board. I still haven’t settled on any one make-up design. Warrior or pixie-like? For the convention, I just settled on lots of bronzer. JediTink spends most of her time outdoors!

JediTink debuted at Star Wars Celebration VI in Orlando in 2012, and she was a hit! Anthony Daniels was scared of the “ew…fairy”, but I got a pic with him! I felt like a movie star when several attendees and photographers gathered around to take pictures that first morning. I entered the SW Celebration Costume Contest for the first time and got 2 awards! I got Second Place in my category (Jedi) AND won an honorary award: “Most Sparkly Jedi.” It doesn’t get any better than that!

The awesome thing about a mash-up costume is that it can exist in two worlds. In just 2 weeks I’m attending the Disney D23 Expo in Anaheim, CA. I entered JediTink into the FIRST EVER Disney A La Mode Costume Contest, and I just received the email today that I’ve been accepted! So join me on Stage 23, August 9th at 2:30pm. Let’s see how far JediTink can fly!!

Thank you to my husband, Richard Woloski, for putting up with my (very) loud cursing at the sewing machine, protecting me in downtown LA’s fashion district, giving up space in his plane seat to accommodate fragile wings, and being the best photographer ever!

Dukan Diet 2013: Week 3 – A Break for Breakfast

Day 18 – Day 20:  Tuesday – Thursday, 7/23-7/25

Today’s Weight: 131 – 132 – 130

Total Weight Lost: 4.8 lb’s

Goal Weight: 124

Yes, you saw that right. 131 lb’s, then up to 132, then down to 130. Crazy!

After a lifetime of eating cereal for breakfast, I sometimes still can’t wrap my head around the weird stuff we eat for breakfast now. Here is a normal PV Day breakfast:

PV Breakfast

One poached egg with fresh basil and garlic salt

Turkey bacon

Farm fresh organic tomatoes with fresh basil and lemon pepper

Lemon Popovers

If someone told me as a kid that this is the kind of breakfast I should be eating, I’d look up at them in disbelief, then pour another bowl of Cracklin’ Oat Bran!

Recipe: Lemon Popovers

I like to pre-make Dukan waffles so we can pop them in the toaster oven in the morning for a quick breakfast. I experimented today with a different flavor: lemon! I just expanded on the recipe for Dukan waffles that I found here.

Because I like to make a big batch, it’s easier and quicker to dump the batter into muffin tins and have them all bake in the oven at once, instead of waiting 3 minutes for each individual waffle to finish. They come out a little spongey and moist – very much like the consistency of Popovers that have fallen. So here they are – Lemon Popovers!

Quantity: 24 Popovers

2 cups Fat-free Greek yogurt (vanilla or lemon)

8 Eggs

3/4 cup Splenda

1 cup Corn Starch

4 tsp Baking Powder

1 cup Powdered Skim Milk

1 Tbsp Coriander

2 Tbsp Lemon Juice (fresh-squeezed from organic lemons will give you the best flavor)

2 tsp Lemon extract

Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Mix all ingredients together. Pour into muffin tin. Put in the oven for about 12-15 minutes. When the tops just start to brown, they should be done.

These turned out so yummy!

Dukan Diet 2013: Day 17 – Lemon Almond Poppy-Seed Oat Bran Bars

Day 17:  Monday, 7/22

Today’s Weight: 130.4 (-0.4 lb’s)

Total Weight Lost: 4.4 lb’s

Goal Weight: 124

Sometimes you have to take the time to make the staple food for this diet: Oat Bran Bars. If you’re familiar with the diet, you know you should be eating 2 Tbsp of Oat Bran a day. Rather than just scoop it out and eat it raw – which would be kind of gross, it’s better to bake them into pancakes or bars or muffins. All with (mostly) Dukan-approved ingredients, of course! I like experimenting with the ingredients. Today I made a giant batch of these:

Quantity: Two 9″ x 11″ pans

Bake: 350 degrees

Time: 30-35 minutes

4 cups Oat Bran

2 cups Wheat Bran

32 oz. Vanilla Yogurt (or lemon if you have it)

4 cups Splenda

2 cups Skim milk powder

3 Tbsp lemon extract

2 Tbsp almond extract (this gives it a really good flavor additive)

16 eggs

1/3 cup baking powder

4 Tbsp poppy seeds

Zest from 3 fresh lemons

juice from 3 fresh lemons

1/2 cup – 1 cup sliced almonds (not Dukan-approved)

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix all ingredients together. Pour into two 13″ x 9″ pans and bake for 30-35 minutes.

Makes 12 muffins, bake for 15 minutes.

Dukan Diet 2013: Day 16 – Zucchini Slow Cooker Meal

Day 16:  Sunday, 7/21

Today’s Weight: 130.8

Total Weight Lost: 4 lb’s

Goal Weight: 124

Veggie, sweet veggie day! I made a slow-cooker meal out of my Farm Fresh To You veggies: zucchini, tomatoes and onions + tomato sauce. Put those ingredients in the slow cooker on Low for 6 hours and you’ve got a fantastic veggie side dish.

I’m clearly on a plateau, but I’m willing to stick it out and see where this goes. Have a good week!

Dukan Diet 2013: Week 2

Day 12-Day 15:  Tuesday-Friday, 7/16-7/19

Today’s Weight: 130.2 -> 131.8 -> 131.6

Total Weight Lost: 3.6

Goal Weight: 124

My weight is just all over the place! However, I measured my waist and that’s lost an inch.

On PV days I load up with veggies. Broccoli, carrots, tomatoes, lettuce, cucumbers. Mine, mine, mine!

Mine mine mine
